A dead tree ! That's right, but take a closer look:

| We only realised, after downloading the photo, that there are also initials and a date carved into the tree "RS" and either '1945' or '1995' We'll just have to go back for a better look. |
The tree is full of holes and home to a few Sulphur Crested Cockatoos who screamed abuse at us and flew off... obviously sick of their home being photographed.
It was nice seeing this piece of highway art.

screamed abuse. ha! what a cool carving!
ReplyDeleteOh I love this--it's fabulous!! Thanks so much for sharing!
ReplyDeleteWell spotted! I rather like the lizard :)
ReplyDeleteThis is fabulous reminds me of the shoe tree. I wonder what it means. B
ReplyDeleteIt's a superb carving and it gives a new life to this dead tree.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if it has a special meaning, or is it just for Art?
I'm glad you spotted and took a pic to show us Susan.
There is a huge tree near where I live that is carved with people initials (young lovers mainly!). Dates go back to 40 years ago and i can't stop imagining what these young people have become, have they got married -together?-, they must be grandparents, what did they do in their lives etc...But the tree being alive contrary to yours, the carvings tend to get deformed as the bark expands.
it's fascinating!
I don't know what it is about Americans but for some reason we cut down dead trees. People look at me like I'm a tree huggin hippie when I speak up for the woodpeckers that need the dead trees.
ReplyDeleteNice tree Susan. I have a picture you will like.
dead trees have such character!!
ReplyDeletegreat shot, too...with the blue sky behind...
and then to discover some ancient hieroglyphics carved into it!! wow...that really IS an old tree!! :)
love it!!
what a find and that observant eye that found it....i love these types of things!!!
ReplyDeletevery cool!!!!!
Hi everyone, it was great to read how everyone enjoyed the carving. I spotted it on the way to Sale (no time to stop then. MD remembered where it was on the trip home fortunately!
ReplyDeleteTexwisgirl, ha ha, those cockies did not like me flashing the camera at their tree!! They can swear like troopers in Cockyish ;-)
Calling Ravens, you're very welcome ... I love that someone did this to the tree :D)
Desiree, thank you ... yes, it's a nicely drawn lizard. Just like the huge goannas that love to climb those trees - after the Cockatoo's and other birds' eggs no doubt ;-)
Buttons, yes, your shoe tree popped into my mind afterwards. It's good coming across these things isn't it.
DeeBee, you're right - it does give new life to the tree.
I like the use of the tree you mention too - I wonder how many people have gone back to see where they left their marks :D)
Mary, good for you - keep speaking up for those trees. The amount of bird, insect and reptile life that the dead trees support is amazing. When they've fallen down too, if they can possibly be left in place, they then provide a myriad homes for other creatures, plants, fungi etc before finally rotting and enriching the soil.
Wow - I'd say there's a few of us tree-huggers here Mary ;-)
Laura, thanks - there are a lot of them along the highway too. They do have a lot of character and are just as lovely to look at as the live trees. Glad you enjoyed the photos too :D)
Debbie, thank you very much... funny, we've passed that spot many times. It's only since I've become an enthusiastic with the camera that I'm really seeing so much more in everyday life. You know what I mean ... sizing it up for potential as a subject!
What a cool photo Susan-such character! Good eye! Funny how you pass a spot many times, and eventually you actually see something you didn't realize before. But who would expect such a great carving in a tree? I look for a story in a lot of things I see, and you found one in just one tree.
ReplyDeleteI'm running behind-sick again. The cough from my bronchitis caused muscle spasms in my side and I had to go back to the doctor. Couldn't sit comfortably. It's starting to let up finally. Have a wonderful weekend...got to check out your coffee blog, I saw something new!
Hi Susan, thanks for popping over... especially when you're not too good still.
ReplyDeleteWe got a real kick out of finding this special tree - I'd love to find out more about it.
Cheerio and get better soon :D)
Interesting highway art. I like the fact that it's tasteful.
ReplyDeleteI love the new header. Sorry I haven't visited in a while.
Thank you Lavi, yes it's something that I don't think anyone could object to.
ReplyDeleteThanks re the header - I love the bird Scorpio designed for me. Just felt like a little change... sort of like re-arranging furniture ;-)
