Running away to Raymond Island (Part 1)

Raymond Island is approximately 6km (3.7 miles) long by 2km (1.2 miles wide) in the Gippsland Lakes, Eastern Victoria, just 200 metres off the coast, across from the town of Paynesville. A chain ferry links the Island to Paynesville on the mainland.

We felt like running away together for the day.

So we drove to Paynesville.
Enjoyed a hamburger by the water.
Jumped on the Ferry (Pedestrian Class) for the short ride across the 152 metres of McMillan Strait.
Hopped off the Ferry, turned right and  made our way along the boardwalk - no set plan, just followed our noses.

Come along and see where we went in this beautiful and peaceful part of the world.

The first glimpse of Raymond Island from the ferry

The boardwalk - such a beautiful day!

Thick Ti-Tree and vegetation - not one mozzie disturbed us.

We took another right hand turn, this time on to the beach.

A couple of kids again - crunching the mussel shells.

Must be mid-morning nap time for the locals.

Plain old "pig-face" or Portulacca - so familiar and yet it does
a mammoth job in stopping erosion from wind and water.

Can see we're coming to, what we now know is, Montague Point....
it's just around the corner.

.... and here it is. As we turned the corner, the breeze came up, but it's
still such a pleasant day.

Some more a little bit later ~

Correa Communities [warning contains images that might bite, sting or scare!]

This is a really hardy type of Correa - don't know its name, a tiny
cutting was given to me by a Lady who owned a Nursery in which we were
only browsing.  "Here, pop this in the ground - you won't regret it" she said.
I did and I don't!

MD's bees thoroughly enjoy the Correas too.
For those who haven't seen the previous Bee posts, this is
Guillelmina,  just one of the thousands of MD's
hardworking Italian bees.
(Yes, they all have names. They work so hard and give so
much.... how could we let them remain nameless!)
Here is a link to other bee posts in this blog.

Two bags full.

I keep a respectful distance from spiders, but am continually in awe
of their beautiful creations!

Smokescreen

I took these photos at Paynesville..... not in the mist, but in the smoke drift from the recent fires at Tostaree, East Gippsland.

Some 11,365 ha were burnt along with several homes, sheds and fences, but, fortunately, there was no loss of life. It was declared contained over the weekend.

Floods and  fires around the country... what a devastating time it's been (and still is) for some.
