Once a year

Poor little Orchid, she's just had an
invitation to a party.... and not a thing to wear!

Off to the hairdressers.
Hair looks good.... now, what about her dress ?

Ahh, simply splendid.

Orchid gets a bit carried away during the
Rhumba,  lifts her skirts and kicks up
her heels.... on such a beautiful night.

She even loses a slipper and....
oh well, you know the rest.

The morning after....
Oh, her aching head.
Hmm, a nice cup of coffee perhaps?
(double shot no doubt)

Memories!
Same time, same place, next year.

  3. Delightful commentary, Susan!!! 10/10 for inventiveness, creativity and humour :)

Stunning pictures of a splendid artwork. Does it have a fragrance by any chance? Looks like you have a wonderful tropical garden :)

  4. ~ Robyn, aw - that's really beaut you had a laugh out of it. Especially in the morning. Thanks for telling me.

~ Buttons, yes, thanks, the Rhumba one was my favourite - it took many goes to get that pic... I couldn't bend down properly, so just held the camera, clicked and hoped!

    ~ Desiree, many thanks :)
Actually, it smells awful, but only for a couple of days! Guess it just relies on its beauty to get by in the plant world ;-)
Yes, it's just a tiny section of the garden which has a lot of shade. I call it my "rainforest", lol, but it works... have managed to attract frogs to it which is delightful.

  5. Susan, you are a brilliant story-teller!
I love orchids (in pot, don't have the adequate weather for growing them in trees), but i have never been able to make them bloom the second year..or the years after...is there a trick?

  7. Great series of photos and funny commentary. Well done! How long do they flower for? It is so beautiful. I wish I could grow them . I get given them for presents and then I kill them...I still have one struggling to stay alive but i have never had one flower.

  8. Magnificent! I'm green with envy you can grow such a beauty. We have a few wild orchids here in the woods but they are VERY hard to find and nothing like this one. My mother was a florist and I would see orchids there that were grown in a greenhouse, but they did not come close to rivalling this! Tell me did this happen over the course of 24 hours?

  9. ~ Hi DeeBee, and thankyou.
No trick needed. I was given this plant 3 years' ago (it was very small then, just a couple of green bulbs in dirt). I was told to shake the dirt off, put them into a larger container filled only with coconut fibre, keep it out of direct sunlight with an occasional water. I did that, and the only feeding I give it is a very occasional splash of worm wee, which I water all my plants with. A lot of leaves fall on to it and that forms a mulch of sorts. Oh, and it also gets some banana skin which I toss haphazardly around that area of the garden. This is its second year of flowering and it is so hardy. I once read an article on How to Look after Orchids, but I couldn't be bothered going to all the fuss recommended - mine was quite happy!

Just a thought DeeBee, you could try doing the same things with a pot indoors, or under shelter. As long as it's free-draining I'd say. Who knows...worth a try perhaps!!

~ Hello Cathy, welcome to my blog :)
Ah, yes, she does look a bit wrung out - tired and emotional I expect, after her big night out!
Thank you for your comments, I always appreciate them.

~ Many thanks Diane, the hanging bud in the first picture stays like that for about 2 weeks, it's in its spread out stage for 3 or 4 days and the flower is open for 4 days, only at its best for 2... then the ants come and feast. When it collapses, it's all gone within 3 to 4 days.

It's a shame you can't get yours to come on - if it's struggling anyway, perhaps it might like a new nest of coconut fibre hanging out amongst your beautiful tropicals which I remember seeing in one of your posts. Might work :)

~ Thanks Mary, I feel a fraud because I just chuck on some banana peel and the occasional dribble of worm wee now & then ;-) Other than that, the poor thing is left to its own devices all year :O
I do appreciate your comments though Mary.

Oh, those wild orchids must be beautiful to see - out in their natural habitat! Did you get involved in your Mother's work as a florist? How exciting to have had that experience with her. I love it when walking into a florist's shop - ooh the intoxicating fragrances.

If you read my answer to Diane, I've given a rough time frame as to how long it takes for orchid to flower.
At the end, there's just a white dried stick hanging out of the pot. I just leave it there. Let sleeping orchids be, I say ;-)

  10. Wow, gorgeous photos and story Susan! It would make a marvelous children's book. What type of orchid is it?

  11. ~ Hello Kat, thank you kindly :)
It says "Stan.nigroviolacea" on the little tag that was with it. Apparently that variety is supposed to have a heady spicy fragrance... no, not ours!

  16. Lovely! The orchid's story is so delightful, it's almost poetry in pictures.

Poor thing, she withered afterwards, but hey, carpe diem!

  17. ~ Lavi, thank you very much! Yes, and there she lies withered for the rest of the year until her next big wonderful moment. Such is her life ;-)
