in progress... paintings

I have quite a few paintings on the go.  This little post might spur me on to complete them.  Don't get me wrong, I love painting, but sometimes it's easier to start something new when I get to a certain stage on a current one.

Here's what I mean.
These fishes I posted about in February.  It's a watercolour and I intended to do some ink detailing.

Here it is as it stands today.  I have a lot to learn about shading and giving things a 3D look.  Get learning Susan!

Then I decided I wanted to paint a crab that I'd taken a photo of last year.
This is the start....

... and this is as far as I've got.  It looks a bit grim - I like my paintings to look bright, so I'm thinking a radical change is needed.
Fortunately, it's in acrylic - which means quick drying and it allows me to go over and over as many times as I like.
I also forgot about the rules of composition, but, well, sometimes Susan makes up her own rules - it's just a hobby ;D)

While browing on YouTube "how to" vids, I saw some demonstrations of "Intuitive Painting".  Paint is applied to canvas in a random way using about 4 or 5 colours.  Then cover the canvas with a sheet of cling wrap and kind of mush the paint around with your fingers.  After that, the cling wrap is carefully removed and the result being allowed to dry.

Here's one of those videos. It's 1:52 long and is by Terry Ann titled "Alone with his Thoughts":

I did it on top of an underpainting of blue and when adding the paint had put some dark swirls first, then the colours.

Anyway, the idea was to look every which way at the result.  Turn the canvas around until something jumps out at you and then proceed to paint a picture.

I was intrigued to see the result.  Look at the lower right hand side, I could see a dog's face immediately.

... here, I've cropped that section - do you see the dog face?

I had no problem finding things in there and I must say it was truly random how the mish mash and mushing of paint turned out. I didn't manipulate it in any intentional way.

Here's what I've done with it so far.

It's kind of my "using up leftover paint for the day" painting.  It will be a long time in progress as I have no real forward thinking about this one.... or meaning.... it is what it is.  Fun!

Cheers now :D)

    1. Many thanks T... after what you said, I'm a lot happier with the crab - perhaps he was just meant to be a dark one after all!
... and, yes, I do have a soft spot for fantasy/mythical type pictures - never really did one but this kind of jumped out at me. There's definitely something in this intuitive painting. I really do appreciate your kind comments :D)

    1. Hi Vicki ... my head is just soooo big now, I'm so chuffed. Thank you very much. I was not sure whether to put in the progressives but I always love to look back and see the beginnings of something, whatever the end result. I'm so appreciative of your encouraging words :D)

  4. Your little fairy reminds me we should be seeing red mushrooms in the garden soon. There is plenty enough rain to bring them out.

  5. You are having fun painting and turning out some lovely pictures. I would like to see the red mushroom go and because the purple looks like the fairy's long billowing skirt.

    1. Hi Diane, and thank you - I can actually visualise what you mean... I couldn't decide what to do with the purple. Also, just below the fairy's wings I can also see another fairy kind of sitting within the reddish/purple circle too. A lot of lovely time yet to be spent on this evolving fantasy painting. I do appreciate your comments and suggestions too :D)

  6. ...you would get lost in time when creating your art Susan. The finale' painting has your own stamp on it with that little dog in the corner, sure, I could see it! It's a whimsical painting.

    1. Thank you too Debbie. It's quite exciting really, I paint with no pressure at all - and it's such a freeing feeling now that I've reached that point. Ha ha, only trouble is that I've now got little paint spots on some clothing I would rather not have ... apparently that's a universally shared problem! Yes, I cover up but not properly apparently ;D)

  8. Oh my goodness! How did you see all of that in the multicolored painting? I did see the dog, but you took the picture to a whole new dimension! It's fantastic just the way it is! No real forward thinking, eh? I think it's something else! And, I do love your fish and crab paintings. You really have a way with color, Susan!

Thanks for sharing this...just wonderful! Take care, hugs from me! ♥

    1. Hi Suzanne, goodness knows what's in my head eh!! I looked at a few YouTube videos and followed their instructions on just "letting go". Amazing this world of technology that we can do that, and I'm also amazed at the generosity of people who make those videos too - they're so helpful.
I'm so glad you liked them and, yes, I love colours - thanks so much for popping over again, lovely to see you here :D)

  9. I must say your whimsical painting is probably my favourite of the three, but then I Fantasy is something I am always drawn to. I work on quilts the way you do your paintings, I get to a point and walk away for a while just to see what might be possible. Looking forward to see what happens next with the three paintings. x

    1. Thanks Jackie, it's certainly the one I've felt most at home with I have to say. Can see myself experimenting a lot more along that theme.
Yes, it makes a big difference being away from things for a while. You kind of come up with a new idea or something just pops into your head doesn't it.
I appreciate your comments and your visit. Cheers for now and enjoy playing around and experimenting with your new lens :D)

  10. Your art is coming along nicely Susan. I love the last painting, I see the dog and what you have done with the painting is magical. I must give that method a try myself...looks like a lot of fun. :-)

    1. So lovely of you to say Vi - many thanks. Yes, it's definitely fun and if nothing clicks the first time, very easy to do it over and over - once the paint is dry each time :D)
