THE CHOOK CHRONICLES
share the ups and downs of life in the chookyard with a great bunch of girls
(Blackie, Whitey, Jessica, Paris and The Two Kittys)
BLACKIE’S BIO: ~she’s a Dark Barred Plymouth Rock ~was first on the chookyard scene, along with Whitey ~because of her dark colouring, those beautiful black and white stripes, she was named Blackie ('Stripey' just didn't do it!) Position on the Who-Rules-the-Roost Ladder: Blackie is the Chook in Charge and defers to no other chook. Personality: Quiet and laid back. Boks only when the situation requires it, when someone needs a dressing down, or as a warning to get out of the way, or just because she can. | |

Blackie is just gorgeous, Susan. Love the bio. :)
ReplyDeleteDo you have problems with foxes?
Thanks Vicki, glad you enjoyed it, she is beautiful - they all have such different personalities :D
ReplyDeleteFortunately, no probs with foxes - they are around, but Tloml has completely enclosed the yard with chook wire and buried the sides a foot below ground level.
Eagles and hawks could also cause problems.
One day, after being alerted by screeching Cockatoos, Tloml saw 3 eagles circling overhead. (The chooks were all still just pullets and very nervous).
The Home Yard was covered overhead but, at that stage, the Day Yard wasn't and they were trapped in the Day Yard.
He raced down to them, called them all along and, bless their little chicken hearts, they followed him single file into the safety of the Home Yard.
THREE eagles! Poor chooks.
ReplyDeleteWe don’t have hens but we have a lot of small birds (wrens, fantails, willie wagtails, honeyeaters etc) around the house and if there’s a bird of prey anywhere within cooee, they disappear in a flash. The silence is usually our first indicator there is anything wrong.
The birds of prey are beautiful to watch in the sky, but .... :(
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely selection of small birds visit your garden!
Just read through all your chook bio's - what a hoot! Followed your link from Rhonda's blog and had a wee look around.
